Custom Manufacturing

Our molding divisions located in Athens, TN provide a complete range of services ranging from design to production and assembly.

Very few companies offer such a wide variety of services. We have been a proud manufacturer for over 50 years. Our only secret is our astounding customer relationships.

Structural Foam

Structural Foam is a low pressure injection molding process in which we expand the material through the use of nitrogen gas or a Chemical Blowing Agent (CBA). This process is typically used to manufacture large parts with a minimum wall thickness of .180".

Benefits
  • Larger Parts
  • Up to a 15% weight reduction
  • Stronger/stiffer parts
  • High impact resistance
  • Dimensionally stable
  • Less expensive tooling
  • Faster project launches
  • Multiple injection locations
  • Ability to run multiple molds at one time
  • Uses common injection molding materials
  • Recyclable
Capabilities
  • Up to a 150 pound shot
  • Up to 500 tons - equal to 3000 ton injection molding
  • Various resins including reprocessed

Structural Web

Structural Web is an offshoot of structural foam molding and similar to Gas Assist technology. In Structural Web we inject nitrogen gas directly into the mold either through the nozzle or gas pins. These parts are designed with gas channels and form hollow ribbing further strengthening the product. This process provides a superior surface finish and a stronger part if designed properly. It may also reduce the cycle time but does not have the same weight reduction capabilities as structural foam.

Benefits:
  • Thinner nominal wall
  • Smoother surface, comparable to injection molding
  • Eliminates the swirl effect in structural foam
  • Faster cycle times
  • Various resins

Thermoforming

Thermoforming (AKA Vacuum Forming) is a very simple process typically used for lower volume production parts. In this process we heat an extruded sheet of plastic over a mold under vacuum pressure. The sheet becomes a direct replica of the mold surface. Although it is not as accurate as other processes, it can be very repeatable and an excellent solution low volume part of any size.

Capabilities:
  • Max sheet size 90" x 100"
  • Typical materials: Styrene, ABS, HDPE
  • Typical sheet thickness - range from .062" to .450"
  • Decorative and acrylic/koran capped

Injection Molding

Our strengths:
  • A highly efficient atmosphere
  • Wide range of equipment and capabilities
  • Large part capabilities
  • Structural parts using gas assist or blowing agents
  • Decorative parts
Capabilities
  • 88 to 1500 ton
  • 1 - 60 oz shot size
  • Gas assist
  • Chemical blowing agents (CBA)
  • Over Molding
  • Assembly
  • Bulk/Silo resins - HDPE, PP, Styrene, ABS (Other resins purchased to order)

Finishing / Assembly

Plastic Industries is one of the largest single suppliers of painting plastic parts in the Southeast. We specialize in multi layered finishes such an antique and wood grains. Each of our finishes are customized to your request and thoroughly tested for resistance to fading, cracking, peeling and bleeding.

Our finishing processes also include lamination and hot stamping.

Many projects require some sort of value added service. For some this is the difference between an idea and reality. We can customize our capabilities to best suite your needs and are constantly looking for opportunities to better serve our customers.

Capabilities
  • Consumer Packaging Line
  • At press and off-line general assembly
  • Sonic welding
  • Decorating
  • Stud drivers

China Manufacturing

One of our top goals is to become a worldwide manufacturer. In 2005, we opened an office in Hong Kong to manage our joint ventures in China and Malaysia. Now over 1/3 of our production is imported. Although we are committed to being a US manufacturer, it is obvious that some applications are just better suited or more cost effective to be imported.

Current Services from Asia
  • Injection Molding
  • Finishing
  • Assembly
  • Mold Making
  • RF Sealed products
  • Stamping
  • Die Casting
  • Hardware
  • Wood products

Engineering

We are blessed to have some of the greatest minds in the industry within our organization. We use their gifts to design new products for both internal and external customers. Some of our best success stories begin in our Engineering Department.

Make it better, faster, cheaper!

Mold Making

All our basic manufacturing services require some sort of tooling and we have teamed with a number of shops around the world to provide the best solutions for the product required. Many factors go into picking the right source, but all our vendors are fully qualified and manufacture high quality molds.

Our in house tool room concentrates on preventative maintenance, repair and engineering changes. Their job is to keep our production going and help troubleshoot on the fly. Often we are doing minor changes right in the press to meet even the strictest of Just-in-Time requirements.
